I.
Silver let out a howl and leapt out of the bushes into the clearing, landing against the Alpha Male of the Black Paw Pack. The force of his landing threw Syth off the yellow female and sent both males somersaulting across the clearing.
Silver growled and bit down on Syth’s shoulder angrily, causing the intruder to let out a yelp of pain. Syth rolled over and pinned the blue male to the ground, slashing his claws across the other male’s eye furiously. Silver let out a deep howl and kicked Syth off, lunging toward his sister.
“Run!” he hissed at Moon, who stared at her brother’s bleeding eye.
“But Silver…” she began. He cut her off with a look of pure terror for her life, which sent her running for help.
Syth smiled behind Silver and leapt onto the male’s back, biting down hard on his neck. Silver growled and stood up on his hind legs, bucking wildly to throw Syth of his back.
Silver turned, growling deeply, and the fur standing up on his back. The fury and hatred pulsed through his veins as her let out a rabid-sounding bark, the drool dripping from his mouth.
Suddenly, an orange blur leapt into the clearing, followed by a yellow one.
“Cross, get back. He’s mine,” Silver hissed at his trainer. Behind Cross, Fire stood tall, growling softly.
“I know, Silver. We’re just here as back up,” Cross explained, his eyes never straying from Syth.
Silver nodded and lunged toward his sister’s rapist angrily. The intruder hissed and leapt out of the clearing, realizing that he wouldn’t be able to take out Silver, lest he face the anger of Cross and Fire. In a battle two to one against the Head Fighter and his top trainee, Syth knew he would lose.
“You ok, Silver?” Cross asked, eyeing the son of the Alphas of the Pack. He gazed over the male and his gaze came to rest on the male’s mauled eye.
“I’ll be fine,” Silver hissed, looking up at Cross. The orange male shuddered as Silver’s one eye landed on him. For a second, he could have sworn the male’s eye was deep red, but when he looked again, it appeared normal.
“Er, Silver?” he said as he shook his head. “You’re going to want to head toward Moon’s den. White and Moon are waiting there.”
Silver nodded and then looked up.
“Just curious, how did you get here so quickly?” he asked his friend.
“Well, Fire and I were waiting in Moon’s den anyway when she got back. She alerted us immediately and we left.”
Silver seemed curious, but didn’t ask why they were at Moon’s den. He just lunged forward, running clumsily toward his sister’s den.
II.
Silver stumbled into Moon’s den, tripping over his own paws and somersaulting forward. He came to a stop in front of White Paw, who leapt up and pounced on him, her eyes shining with tears as she licked at him.
“Oh, Wolfess! Thank Haven you are ok!” she whimpered, tears pouring from her eyes.
“I won’t be much longer if you don’t stop suffocating me!” Silver croaked. White blushed and sat up, allowing her mate to take a deep breath of air.
“Moon! You’re alright?” he said, gazing over at the young healer. Moon nodded and stepped toward him.
“I could say the same for you! Look at your eye!” she exclaimed. Silver grunted and put a paw over his right eye.
“It’s no biggie, sis,” he muttered. Moon sat back and rolled her eyes. Silver gave her his heart-breaking smile and she giggled.
“So, what’s the damage?” he asked, smiling. Suddenly, the smile faded. “Where are Gem and Blood Paw? As the alphas and our parents, they should be here!” Moon looked down and her tail drooped.
“Gem, Blood Paw, Sapphire Blood, Copper Blood and Blue Tail have not returned from the hunt. Yang, however, has,” Cross said, stepping forward and revealing the large black female huntress.
“Silver,” she said and bowed her head.
“Rise, Yang. What has become of your hunting party?” he said calmly, though he felt his heart was sinking.
“Lady Gem was torn pieces by a sabre female. Master Blood Paw was attacked and killed by the exile Syth. Sapphire and Copper Blood are missing. Blue Tail is also missing. I am sorry, Lady White, Master Silver,” Yang finished. Her white ears twitched and she danced on her white paws anxiously.
“Thank you, Yang. You may go,” Silver said with a cold and frightening calmness about him. White looked at her mate and shuddered, fearing his lack of emotion.
“Silver… this makes you the Alpha Male of Grandfather Silver’s legendary pack,” Moon pointed out. Silver looked up, his face expressionless as Cross, Fire and Moon dropped to their knees to bow to their new Alphas. Silver looked at his mate, who seemed to look slightly sick to her stomach.
“Thank you. Please rise. White and I shall return to our den. We have much to do before moving officially to the Alpha den. Cross, make it clear that everyone is to show up for a meeting tomorrow when the sun is in directly above us,” Silver commanded. Cross nodded, but hesitated at the entrance.
“Yes?” Silver hissed.
“Your young brother needs to be cared for, do not forget,” Cross whispered just loud enough for Silver to hear. The new Alpha nodded, knowing his brother’s belongings were already in the Alpha den, for Gold was still a puppy and lived in his parents’ den.
III.
“Silver?” White whispered. The male looked up, his face still emotionless. White flinched and waited for the explosion. Much to her surprise, he merely sunk to the ground and began to weep. White slipped forward and nuzzled against him.
“Silver, with so much going on now, I’m not sure if it’s such a great time to bring this up, but, before she was raped, Moon did a check up on me. I’m, um, pregnant with two puppies,” White whispered. She looked at him curiously and saw the emotion begin to flood back. His wonderful, joyful glow began to return and it brought warmth to White’s heart. He looked at her with pure pride and she smiled happily.
“Oh, that’s wonderful!” he exclaimed. “Fire is too, isn’t she?” he asked.
White nodded. “And Purple. I’m going to safely assume that Moon is as well.” As she finished her sentence, she suddenly realized that it probably wasn’t the best thing to bring up Moon being pregnant. She was right. Hatred flickered through Silver’s eyes momentarily, but it passed.
“I’m very tired, love,” he whispered and rolled over, closing his left eye. White sighed and nuzzled against him, closing her eyes as well.
IV.
“I realize that you are all either very confused as to why I am up here today instead of my father, or you are grieving due to the terrible news you found out yesterday,” Silver said loudly, his voice filling the clearing. The wolves let out a low rumble of noise as they began to talk softly, but Silver lifted a paw.
“There is much news to discuss. I shall begin with the bad. We have lost many of our pack in the past few suns. My father and mother, the previous Alphas, were among the dead. We also lost Sapphire Blood, Copper Blood and Blue Tail. They may not be dead, but they are no longer here. Moon Blood, daughter of Gem and Blood Paw, Gold Blood, son of Gem and Blood Paw, and White Paw, daughter of Black Fire and White Water, please join me, Silver Blood, son of Gem and Blood Paw, to lead the Ceremony of Mourning for Gem, Blood Paw, Copper Blood, Sapphire Blood and Blue Tail.”
Moon stepped up, carrying the young puppy, Gold Blood. Behind her stood White Paw, who held her head low to the ground. She set the puppy down and closed her eyes.
The three Blood siblings and White Paw raised their heads, letting out four mournful howls. Soon, the entire pack was howling mournfully. The sound rang across the land, stretching to the edge of the territory.
As if on cue, the pack’s howling died down, leaving White, Gold, Silver and Moon to howl. White cut off her howl, followed by Moon and Gold.
Silver jumped up, rearing into the air, his head reaching toward the heavens. A final howl emitted from him, his tail hanging low, tears pouring from his one eye. He dropped to the ground, his howl finished.
“On the brighter side,” Silver said, having regained his Alpha posture, “we have three, maybe four, pregnant females! White Paw, Purple Paws, FireClaws and possibly Moon Blood are with puppies!”
The wolves below howled and barked joyfully as the four females blushed. Silver smiled and leapt down, the meeting having finished.
