The red death was a plague that struck the land hard. Those who caught it would not be able to stop bleeding after a cut. Whenever they stopped moving for a long period of time, for example, sleeping, they would begin bleeding from every opening: their noses, ears, urinary tracts, anuses, etc. They would also begin to bleed from places randomly, even if they were not cut. Due to the emense blood lose, they would die quickly after catching it.
To catch it, one had to merely come in contact with the infected blood, even just getting a bit on their fur. They could also get it the usual ways... drinking out of a puddle or pond that an infected beast drank out of, getting to close and being breathed infected breath on, etc.
For this reason, it was the worst plague in history, causing millions of deaths. Whole packs died out because of it.
